Hörl's Sponti gnome harks back to the so-called Sponti scene that had developed during the 1970s and 1980s in Germany, a movement of leftist activists.
Sponti protesters regarded themselves as activists that opposed the parliamentary movement in the early 1970s.
They were active in university towns such as Frankfurt am Main where Hörl’s work has been inspired.
